Program Aimed at Curbing Childhood Obesity and Childhood Diabetes in District 3
On Friday October 2 District 3 Councilwoman Jennifer V. Ramos along with officials
from the Harlandale School District officially launched the SA Kids Get Fit “Walk
to Wellness Challenge” at Schulze Elementary.
The “Walk to Wellness Challenge” is a 10 week exercise pilot program implemented in two different schools in the Harlandale School District aimed at the problematic issue of childhood obesity and childhood diabetes. Both the Wright Elementary and Schulze Elementary 4th grade classes will initially participate in the program.
The program participants were given pedometers, logbooks, jump ropes, water bottles and other items that will assist in the program implementation.
Currently, data shows that several areas in Bexar County have high diabetes mortality rates. There are several communities in District 3, especially in the Harlandale School District that are amongst the highest in the County.
Over 200 children were in attendance at the launch assembly that included several special guest speakers including Dr. Mickey Seger from BMI of Texas. Both principals, Buster Fisher from Schulze and Kathleen Stark from Wright also spoke providing inspiring words for the children in attendance.
Councilwoman Ramos was most certainly thrilled with both the turnout and the enthusiasm
for the program, “This program has one goal—we want to do our part in attacking childhood
obesity and it excites me to see the enthusiastic response by the students and teachers
at both schools.”
One of the programs sponsors, the San Antonio Spurs sent a special guest as well. Making a very special appearance getting the children excited about the program was the Spurs Coyote.
“From all of our sponsors to a wonderful partner in the Harlandale School District to the Spurs Coyote, we are all excited about helping kids get fit and healthier in our community.”
Other program sponsors include Union Pacific, Pest Shield, BMI of Texas and Blue Armor Security Services.
