Surrounded by friends, family and supporters, District 3 councilwoman Jennifer Ramos announced Dec. 5 she will be stepping down from council to begin her campaign for a seat on the Bexar County Commissioner's Court.
Ramos, who will run against Sergio “Chico” Rodriguez in the democratic primary, leaves a year into her second term on City Council.
“It's the right time for me to move on. We are seeing some inefficiencies in our county government and I look forward to serving the district in a better capacity,” she said.
If elected, Ramos would be the first Latina to serve on the Bexar County Commissioner's Court.
Ramos will attend the city's last council meeting of the year on Friday, when her resignation will be announced officially.
The process to select someone to fill her seat will likely happen after the New Year.
Several people have already expressed interest to fill the District 2 seat, including Michael Tejeda, a former District 5 council aide and Anthony Alcocer, the assistant director of development at Texas A&M-San Antonio.
Ramos says that if elected to the commissioner's court, she plans to bring continued growth to the city's Southside.
“We need to make sure we bring in the right resources to provide those great services for all our community, not just certain areas,” she said. “Everybody should be treated the same way with the same public services and that's just one aspect of it.”
Ramos was the last councilperson who was elected under the city's two, two-year term limit. The Bexar County commissioner position's term is four years and has no limit.
Precinct 1 covers much more ground than the District 3 council seat did. Ramos says she already has started getting to know that area's issues, which she says aren't much different than those of the South Side.
“I've been sitting on the metropolitan planning organization for the past two years and I've been able to help with traffic concerns, address some of their traffic needs,” Ramos said. “I've heard some other issues that are in their area as well.”
